ASDAN Youth Award Scheme

Introduction

Chingford School works in partnership with Worth Unlimited* for Waltham Forest* to offer the ASDAN Youth Award at Bronze and Silver levels.

Number of periods per week: 3 in Year 10, 2 in Year 11
Examination and Coursework details:

There is no examination. To achieve the Bronze or Silver awards, pupils must compile a portfolio of evidence showing that they have completed all the necessary components of the award.
The ASDAN Silver Award is GCSE equivalent.

Pupils are required to complete the following for each of the levels:

  • 15 challenges of 4 hours each, in the areas of
    • My Self,
    • My World,
    • and My Future
  • Action Plans
  • A Summary of Achievement
A challenge is an activity done either in a group or individually. Challenges can include a wide range of activities which broaden the pupil’s experience of life and curriculum.
 

A challenge can be linked to curriculum subjects or can be completed outside of the school environment.

Previous challenges have included…

Learn the basics of a new language, Create a web site, Build a robot, Visit BBC Television Centre,Local Business Survey, Photography, Micro-business, Make a video, Plan a meal for teachers, Work with Children, Workplace visits, Help out at Shopmobility, Visit a Police Station, Learn how to be Fire Fighter, Visit a Magistrates Court, Write a Children’s story, Make a model car, Build a Soap Box Kart, Powerpoint presentation, Outdoor pursuits/activities, First Aid course

But these are only ideas… The limit for challenges is only how far you can stretch your imagination!

 
Key Skills:
The Awards focus the pupil on developing the 6 Key Skills of Working Together, Using Numbers, IT, Solving Problems, Communication and Improving own Learning and Performance.
Skills required:
Due to the nature of the Award the programme is suitable for all pupils regardless of current skills or ability. Pupils are expected to be self-motivated and be willing to work in different groups.

Education progression routes:

ASDAN is a nationally recognised awarding body and is recognised by colleges and employers. Self evaluation and portfolio recording of work are highly valued by colleges offering GNVQs.

In addition to the Bronze and Silver Awards, pupils have the opportunity to be entered for the ASDAN Basic Skills Awards in Literacy and Numeracy.

Therefore dedicated pupils can achieve 3 separate Awards in two years.

Interested pupils will be interviewed before being given a place.
