Introduction

This qualification not only covers caring for children, pupils will also learn about adolescents, adults, the elderly and disabled people. It will be a vocationally related qualification which will provide a foundation both for training leading to employment and for further and higher education. It is a double award, so it counts as two GCSE grades. 

Topics Studied
Unit 1 Health, Social Care and Early Years Provision

This unit deals with how Care Services meet the needs of individuals. Pupils will learn the main work roles and skills of people who provide health, social care and early years' services. Pupils will be expected to find work placements to carry out coursework on old people’s homes, medical centres or nursery schools.

Unit 2 Promoting Health and Well-Being

In this unit, pupils will learn how to look after their own health and well being, as well as promoting health for others, eg balanced diets, exercise, health monitoring and illness prevention, blood pressure, safe sex, pollution. They will carry out coursework on a person of their choice to assess how healthy they are. Then they will suggest what they need to do to improve their health.

Unit 3 Understanding Personal Development and Relationships

This unit covers the physical, social, intellectual and emotional development of infancy through to adulthood and the elderly. It looks at friendships, relationships and their effect.

  • Unit 1 - Coursework portfolio - 33% marks - Year 11
  • Unit 2 - Coursework portfolio - 33% marks - Year 10
  • Unit 3 - Written Exam. 1½ hours - 34% marks - Year 11
Progression

Health and Social Care will be useful to anyone considering a career concerned within the Health Service, Social Services or Education. Careers include Teaching, Nursery Assistance, Teacher Assistance, Nursery Nurses, Social Worker with children and families, Hospital Playworkers, Health Visitors, Play workers, Youth and Community workers, Nursing, Disabled Carers and working with the elderly.

This qualification supports progression into further education. Appropriate further education includes GCSE AS and A Levels; VCE; GNVQ; BTEC or NVQ.
